.: Kalamari @ Chiswick :.

If there is a food that reminds me of home that’s calamari. I love Octopus and Squid. It’s a shame that it’s so hard to get it here in UK and if you do it tends to be fried. Although I love fried calamari (our own version of fish and chips is fried Squid (choco frito)):

I prefer Mediterranean style. My grandma used to do a delicious stuffed calamari with rice and spinach inside. Or the fresh Octopus salad

Or the oven baked Octopus (with lots of garlic, olive oil and coriander). This is a thing from the heavens (the dish is called Polvo a Lagareiro).

Because I haven’t been in Portugal for a while now – last time I was there was in march – I found myself craving for this type of food. So we’ve decided that before baby decides to come out, we had to go to a Greek restaurant I had on my wishlist for ages: Kalamari. Normally, when people go to a greek restaurant they are thinking about the houmous, the grilled halloumi and tapas in general. But, as the name suggests, they actually have a few calamari dishes which I was really craving for.

Kalamari is conveniently located in the Chiswich High Road, in the boarder with Hammersmith. The restaurant has a classic greek decor and it wasn’t that busy at all (midweek dinner I guess). So we felt quite peaceful and relaxed

I have to admit I’ve really enjoyed the family feeling. It’s not a pretentious place, but one where you would expect to get an honest meal.

We’ve started with the octopus salad – which to me it’s not as good as the portuguese version – but the octopus was really well cooked and the salad nicely seasoned. Ah, oh I was missing this type of food!

Then we’ve both decided to go for the calamari dishes. He went for the calamari grilled steak and I went for the stuffed calamari (again reminding myself of my grandma’s dish)

14102397_10208159999892513_835769264546794576_n

It was really nice! I still prefer my grandma’s version, but I just couldn’t stop smiling by the realisation how much honest good food is important for me. We were both stuffed, but I wanted something sweet, so we’ve decided to share an ice cream

14202740_10208160000092518_8054889956423359112_n

Which again was really fresh.

I left with a smile on my face for having enjoyed a dinner that remind me of home, and sometimes that’s all you need!

.: Sounds like another food weekend :.

Is there anything better than weekend? Well there is, holidays!! I had quite a mad week this week to ensure my team was up to speed with the tasks while I’m going to be away and trying to close as much points as I could. It was a back to back week and I felt exhausted. Still doesn’t feel real I’m going to be on holiday, but I’m glad this is the case.

Anyway we have an old tradition of going to the cinema when we go on holidays, but this time there was no film available at the time we went there, so we just went for dinner instead. The choice: “The real greek”. I had been there before and wasn’t really interested, but just the thought of grilled halloumi was all I needed to go back. We’ve started with the greek flatbread

12961691_10207125715156041_1745958057964068051_n

Then I went for the grilled calamari, the lamb meatballs (really delicious!!!), the stuffed aubergine and the couscous salad.

Finally the grilled halloumi which we both love!

I have to say it tasted a lot better this time. Finally went for the caramel cheesecake. Not memorable, but easy to eat and tasty

Today went for a brunch with a friend. Initially thought about going to the breakfast club in Soho, but the queue was quite considerable. On our way there we’ve spotted L’eto Cafe and I couldn’t resist the display of cakes on the window. After checking the queue it was an easy decision to go back to L’eto.

I’m so glad we did! The menu has really good choices, but I couldn’t resist banana pancakes with peanut butter cream. Make no mistake, this is not your usual american style peanut butter, it’s way better then that! It tastes really fresh and not too sweet, so I would say the real deal.  The pancakes had a really good flavour too

The combination overall, quite light and tasty. Finally we’ve decided to share the green tea cheesecake, which was so fresh!

Overall was quite happy with the choice. Such a lovely experience and I’m sure I’ll be back. After brunch we went for a stroll and we’ve ended up stopping at Fortnum and Mason which is quite an institution in London. Everything is so pretty that you feel like buying everything

So quite a lovely afternoon and a good start for the holidays!

What’s your favourite brunch place in London?

.: A Prime Lunch :.

Ah, such a dark and gloomy weekend! I feel like just being lazy and stay on the couch. Very tempting indeed. Instead I’ve decided I wanted to try the fabulous place he went for his Christmas party at work (Prime at Chandlers Cross, which is very close to Watford).

I’m so glad I’ve convinced him to take me there! When we arrived it was pretty much empty, but we like that, to arrive when it’s still quiet. But that meant I could only manage a main without any starters. I loved the place immediately! Lovely decoration, very classy and comfortable at the same time. We’ve stayed at a table next to the window and the wine bottles.

Their main speciality is the meat, sourced from a royal approved butcher (how fancy is that?), so I couldn’t resist but to go for a steak. I went for the rump.

I’ve also ordered wine. This starts to remind me the Wed. night out club at work 🙂

Quite a sexy piece of meat, ‘init?

10584081_10206404471685405_4019390200645755848_n

The mushroom sauce was delicious as well! I couldn’t manage pudding so we’ve just ordered coffees. Coffee was really good too. I left the meal with a smile, because I’ve really enjoy it and I hope to convince him to take me back so we can share a t-bone.

Sounds like a really good first 2016 meal away 🙂

.: Ealing Park Tavern :.

I had read a few really interesting reviews about Ealing Park Tavern and since then it was on my wishlist. I just can’t believe I didn’t went any sooner, since I live less than 10m walking from there! As we had a friend over on Friday, we’ve decided it was time to go.

Location wise it’s impossible to miss, as it’s on the main road to south ealing station.

Decor

Well, it looks like a very nice pub. It’s actually quite big, but as we arrived late and it’s Christmas dinner time, we’ve only managed to get a little table for 3.

They are also a micro-brewery and if you like stouts I really recommend the birdie flipper, so flipping good!

The Food

This is the main reason to go! Not only you get a good choice of beers, but also the food is pretty good. I went for one of the specials, pasta with hare and wild mushrooms. The photo is rubbish, I apologise, but the flavour was so good! You could really taste the mushrooms. Good combination of flavours!

12376265_10206277760757711_6038216320098549130_n

Then I saw the pudding menu and I’ve noticed the chocolate mousse, how could I resist that?

12348120_10206277760997717_6619772361846024231_n

So yummy! He had a caramel type one, but not really sure what it was. It was also quite soft and tasty too

So overall we had a really good evening and the agreement that we’ll be back more often. Nothing is better than discovering your local pub is worth a visit! 😀

.: Wed. night out club :.

Yap, that’s right, I’ve created a little dinner club at work. We’ve made a vow to try different restaurants in Bristol, especially because most of us will leave at the end of the year anyway.

The problem with a dinner club at work is that I feel shy photographing the food!!!! So I’ll have to rely on uncle google to find some photos.

The Ox
I had been at The Ox before. If you know Bristol the odds are you’ve been there already or you are looking forward to go. I simply love it! The steaks are delicious and the decor is brilliant, even the chandeliers.

The last time we went there, we’ve ended up being allocated to the cosy room. For mains we’ve decided to share T-Bones. Oh gosh, such a meat feast!!! It’s quite expensive (£65) but it’s worth it, the meat is sublime. It’s way better than the picture below shows.

Then we had Malbec, lots of it. They have a very good wine selection. I didn’t had a dessert as I was quite full, but it was indeed a great evening and one to repeat.

CAU

It had to be a competition with The Ox! CAU is quite recent in Bristol but ever since I’ve noticed it I’ve been looking forward to give it a go.

Because we’ve all wanted to try the special cuts, it means that the smallest portion was 400g, so we’ve skipped starters. I’ve ordered Lomito (£28 for 400g) which was massive. I’m not joking, seriously massive piece of steak and so delicious!!!! The pepper sauce was really good as well. I felt it was too much for me, but it was so good I didn’t rested my fork until I’ve finished it all!

11229758_10206012348122561_1551689589037377789_n

Again it was followed with really nice wine. It wasn’t a cheap meal but it was certainly a very good one! Let’s just say next morning I didn’t had breakfast.

The Pump House

I had the Pump House on my wishlist for a long while and it was an absolutely brilliant evening! You know the places that take you by surprise? Pump House was one of them. I had pump house on my wishlist for a while now, mostly because of the long list of gins (462 different gins). I booked a table for 4 of us and we had such a great time. First we were sitting down just having beers & gin. The first gin that I was recommended was the seaweed which was absolutely delicious!

12011196_10206037414869214_8408649855191999155_n 12193746_10206036021554382_1303840023780584406_n

Next I had blackwater. In the meantime we went to our table, a really cosy space and this is when surprise really started. The bone marrow, the cheese, all of the starters were so good that we were just making funny delighted noises, all of us.

Sample photos from the food

Then the Pork belly, absolutely delicious! Points to note you can choose any wine by the glass, that’s right, any wine in the menu! Really tempting to try the food and wine pairing which they offer on Friday’s and Saturdays. Brilliant place to go

It’s been quite an expensive club, but the food experience has been really good!!!

.: A meat Paradise @ Pitt Cue Co :.

Last weekend (and precisely because it was the Carnival long weekend), the weather was rubbish! I can’t recall a year where that weekend was a good one. So it was the perfect opportunity to go out for lunch with some friends. After a lot of arguing we’ve agreed to try Pitt Cue Co @ Soho.

You know those places that take you by surprise? This was one of them! From the top you just see the small bar, but there’s a small space downstairs – quite cosy I would say – but then the friendly service and the food menu. Suddenly you realise this is not just a burger place, I would say it’s a temple of meat. And so many good flavours!!! The chicken was superb, I had one of the specials which was delicious too.

Look at this, seriously, so yummy

Everyone on our table was like: “Oh my God this is so good!!!” and it was! I’m sure we’ll all be back more often.

If you plan to visit on the weekend try to go a bit earlier because the space is quite small, so there are not many tables available

.: Walking around in Camden :.

A few weeks ago, we had friends over from Germany, so I had planned a few places I wanted to take them. I’ve started with a lunch at the Portuguese place near Camden, in Morning Crescent (O Tino)

You’ve gotta love meat and clams & pickles! (Carne de porco a alentejana) Love it!

Followed by a creamy coffee cookie-cake

And then coffee and honey liquor! After that I was more than ready for the walk. I wanted to take them to Camden, simply because it’s quite a unique part of London and both of them had already been in London before

I was feeling really full, but the food market around Camden is one of the best in London. So many good choices!

The street art is also quite impressive

After Camden we did a walk along the Regent’s Channel

We stopped in Regent’s park for some drinks and later to a pub. We ended up going to Carnaby Street and Picadilly

We’ve also went to a nice fish & chips place in Soho

and then a walk to an awesome place with Guinness (The Toucan Bar)

A night in London is not complete without a stop at Gordon’s! We’ve enjoyed a nice bottle of Port wine for the 4 of us. Yap that was quite an evening
